COLUMBIA (AP) -- Members of two South Carolina churches will be outside 48 grocery stores in Richland and Lexington counties to spearhead a special food drive for the needy.
Representatives of Shandon Baptist and Northside Baptist Churches on Saturday will give shoppers special grocery bags and encourage them to purchase products from a suggested list for the hungry.
The donated items will be taken to the Harvest Hope Food Bank and then distributed to local food pantries and soup kitchens.
Organizers say they hope their 350 volunteers will collect at least 30 tons of food.
Last year, a similar food drive netted more than 108,000 pounds of food, which was the largest one-day drive in the organization's history.
