Sewer break spills waste into Congaree

The break occurred at Pump Station #2 near State Street in Cayce.

CAYCE -- A broken pipe is spilling sewage into the Congaree River according to Cayce Utilities.

The gravity sewer main, which is located at Pump Station #2 behind the Cayce Quarry near State Street, is the source of a leak spilling an undetermined amount of waste into the water.

Utility officials are on the scene working to clean up the spill that was first noticed around 1:30 p.m. Monday.

SC DHEC has also been notified.
