COLUMBIA (AP) -- State utility regulators have set three night hearings on a proposed rate increase for South Carolina Electric and Gas Co.

The Public Service Commission said Wednesday the 6 p.m. hearings will be conducted in Summerville, Charleston and Columbia.

SCE&G is seeking 9.5 percent increase in electricity rates to pay for federally mandated environmental improvements to its plants and for its backup dam near Columbia.

The first hearing is April 26 at Summerville Town Hall. The second is April 27 at the International Longshoreman's Association in Charleston. The last is May 24 at the Public Service Commission headquarters in Columbia.

The request is in addition to a 2.5 percent increase in customers' bills every year for a decade for a new nuclear power plant.
