Democrat Victor Rawl of Charleston said Wednesday he will officially open his campaign.

COLUMBIA (AP) -- A former South Carolina legislator and judge is entering the race against U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint.

Democrat Victor Rawl of Charleston said Wednesday he will officially open his campaign against the South Carolina Republican next week. DeMint is seeking a second term in November.

The 64-year-old Rawl calls himself a moderate Democrat who's tired of the bickering in Washington. He said he wants voters to have a choice.

Rawl served in the state House for 1977-78 and again from 1981-85. He served as a circuit court judge from 1991 to 2003. He is in his first term on Charleston County Council.

Rawl will face Mike Ruckes of Summerville in the June primary. Rock Hill attorney Chad McGowan dropped out of the Democratic race last month.
