(AP) -- CONWAY, S.C. Students at a South Carolina school are leading an effort to build and ship about 1,000 modular homes to earthquake victims in Haiti.

The work begins Friday on the Coastal Carolina University campus near Conway. Organizers are seeking donations and volunteer labor to build the 12-by-8-foot homes in an effort dubbed "Shelter Haiti."

The homes can be built and shipped for $500. Students will build sections that will be shipped and can be assembled in Haiti in about two hours.

Coastal Carolina president David DeCenzo says the school is encouraging everyone in the area to contribute. His wife, Terri, and Coastal Carolina students will travel to Haiti to help assemble some of the homes.
