COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A state senator has dropped his idea for drug tests for those receiving unemployment benefits in South Carolina.
Senators resumed discussion Thursday on a bill overhauling the problem-plagued Employment Security Commission.
Republican Sen. David Thomas of Fountain Inn withdrew his proposal for a random drug screening program for people who get unemployment checks.
Legislators want to overhaul the commission and its management after a series of reports about problems.
One report found the three commissioners running the agency didn't do enough to head off the need for federal borrowing when the state trust fund was going broke. A second said the agency lacked skills to properly account for its finances and faced nearly $1 million in federal fines for not sending income tax payments to the Department of Revenue.
