HONEA PATH, SC (AP) -- The former chief of a South Carolina rescue squad has been arrested and charged with filing a false police report.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reported that former Honea Path Rescue Squad chief Tommy Crawford was arrested Thursday.

Crawford resigned in November amid allegations a squad credit card had been used for personal expenses, including on-line dating sites.

Honea Path Police Chief David King says Crawford filed a false police report last year about fraudulent credit card use. King says investigators think Crawford filed the report to divert attention from himself.

King says investigators found evidence Crawford spent more than $7,000 of taxpayer money for internet dating sites, debts and other personal use between last January and September.

It was unclear if Crawford had an attorney.
