WALTERBORO (AP) -- Law enforcement officials in a South Carolina county are trying to stem a tide of gun violence and gang activity which has led to its highest homicide count in a decade.
State Law Enforcement Division agents have been in Colleton County for two months trying to help local police get a handle on the violence, but the street warfare continues to claim new victims.
SLED arrived in town in the wake of one shooting and another drive-by just two days earlier which killed a 20-month-old girl and two of her relatives.
The shootings have continued. A man was gunned down outside a private club in November. The next month, a witness to another shooting was shot in the parking lot of a nightclub.
