When Gov. Mark Sanford takes the podium to deliver the annual State of the State adress, he will do so knowing it will be his last. But that "lame duck" status doesn't mean he will shy away from issues that he sees as important to South Carolina's future.
According to spokesman Ben Fox, Sanford's main topics will be spending caps, restructuring state government and reforming the Employment Security Commission.
Rep. Anton Gunn (D-Richland/Kershaw) says those topics are fine but he also wants to hear Sanford address government accountability. Gunn believes loopholes that allow politicians to escape punishment for ethics violations should be closed.
Sen. Jake Knotts (R-Lexington) doesn't know yet what to expect from Sanford on Wednesday night, but he hopes the speech is good for the people of South Carolina.
Both lawmakers believe Sanford can be effective in his final year, though Knotts feels that effectiveness has been deminished by governor's Argentina transgressions and the resulting ethics and impeachment hearings.
