COLUMBIA (AP) -- South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer is in no hurry to formally announce his Republican bid for governor, but he's setting a fast pace raising and borrowing money to help him secure the job.

Bauer's campaign reported Friday that it has $1 million on hand for his bid after the state's No. 2 officer put $245,000 of his own cash into the GOP primary race. Meanwhile, nearly 80 percent of the $802,713 Bauer reported came from cash transferred from his lieutenant governor campaign account.

Candidate filings were due this week and Bauer's was one of the last filed.

Including loans, five GOP candidates have raised $4.9 million for their primary and spent $1.3 million. Five Democrats have raised $2 million for their contest and spent $740,859.
