COLUMBIA-  More than 20 million women in the United States are infected with the human papillomavirus. That's according to the Centers for Disease Control. HPV is also the single-known cause of cervical cancer.

January is National Cervical Cancer Screening Month and officials want to remind women to take steps to prevent the disease.

State Representative Joan Brady is fighting to require all young girls to get the HPV vaccination. She says, "It's the easiest way to save lives."

Officials say the best way to screen cervical cancer, is to receive regular pap smears.
