ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Officials say a South Carolina deputy has resigned days after being charged with driving under the influence after crashing a patrol car.

Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams told multiple media outlets Tuesday that Robert Ayers had resigned.

Ayers was arrested Dec. 30 after running into a ditch south of Orangeburg. Troopers say the off-duty officer failed several sobriety tests and refused a breathalyzer test.

Williams says Ayers had been on the force for three years and was put on leave during the investigation.

Ayers was released from jail on bond. A phone listing could not be found, and it wasn't clear if he had an attorney.
