COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina has hired Appalachian State assistant coach Shawn Elliott to be the Gamecocks new offensive line coach.
The 36-year-old Elliott played for the Mountaineers and has been an assistant at the school his entire career, spending the last eight years coaching the offensive line.
Elliott will be South Carolina's third offensive line coach in three seasons. John Hunt was fired at the end of the 2008 season, and Eric Wolford left the team last month to became head coach at Youngstown State.
Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier pointed out Elliot is a native of Camden and is familiar with championship football.
"We're thrilled to have Shawn Elliott join our coaching staff at South Carolina," said Spurrier. "Shawn is a native of South Carolina and is excited about the opportunity to coach here. He has an outstanding record coaching the O-line and winning championships. He is ready for the next challenge and is excited about coaching in the SEC and in Division I football."
Elliott won two Southern Conference titles as a player and helped the Mountaineers to three straight national titles as an assistant coach.
"I'm really excited about the opportunity to coach at South Carolina," said Elliott. "It will be a challenging job and one that I am looking forward to and embracing. I'm excited about getting there on
Monday and hitting the ground running."
