COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina high school principal has been honored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Wando High School Principal Lucy Beckham is the 2010 national high school principal of the year. The announcement was made Monday at the Mount Pleasant school.

Wando is the state's largest school with more than 3,200 students. Beckham has been principal since 1998 and helped oversee the move to a new, larger building in 2004.

Beckham says dividing the school into five academies helps it seem smaller for students. Wando offers more than 250 courses in 37 majors.

The school has received "excellent" ratings since state report cards were first issued in 2001.

Beckham will be honored during a banquet next month in Washington. She will receive $5,000 for the school.
