SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- The four-star Army general in charge of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is moving a new, three-star commander for air operations to the Mideast.
Gen. David Petraeus comes to Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina Wednesday for a ceremony honoring Maj. Gen. Gilmary Hostage III.
In the past, Air Force generals holding Hostage's job were based at Shaw and shuttled to the Mideast. But the Air Force has decided more attention is needed on the scene as the conflict in Afghanistan heightens.
Although Hostage's predecessor was also commander of the 9th Air Force based at Shaw, the Pentagon is splitting the job between two generals. Maj. Gen. William Holland takes the job and will remain at Shaw.
