NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina woman has been charged with trying to kill herself and her two children with exhaust fumes from her car.

Multiple media outlets reported 29-year-old Melissa Jeanne Sawyers of North Augusta is accused of taping a garden hose to the tailpipe Monday night and running it into the back seat to try to fill the car with exhaust fumes.

Sawyer is charged with two counts of attempting to administer poison with intent to kill. She has been denied bond.

A police report says her 10-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy ran from the vehicle screaming and later told police their mother said they were going to go to sleep and wake up in heaven together.

Neither Sawyers nor the children required medical treatment. She remained at the Aiken County jail Friday. It was unclear if she has a lawyer.
