WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has decided to stop funding for a second engine for the Pentagon's next-generation jet fighter, a program that President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates say should end.

The vote on engines for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter comes just two days after the Senate heeded another Obama request in terminating production of the F-22 fighter, the plane that the F-35 will eventually supplant. An amendment to remove $439 million in a defense budget bill set aside for a backup engine made by General Electric Co. and Rolls Royce passed by voice vote after the Senate rejected an amendment maintaining the funding.
