A statewide search an escaped inmate is underway.

Police say 38-year-old Joseph Nelson walked away from his work assignment in Charleston Saturday.

Nelson was serving a 5-year sentence for shoplifting at the minimum security coastal pre-release center.

Joseph Nelson has a medium build, stands around 5 feet 7 inches tall, and weighs around 205 pounds.
