The School District of Newberry County, the Newberry County Sheriffs Office, and the South Carolina National Safety Council are forming a partnership to present a driver training class to young adults age 15-24 to help them gain the skills and decision making ability necessary to get home safely.
"We join parents in a desire to prepare our children to face the challenges of life, said District Superintendent Bennie Bennett. A tragic crash affects everyone, said Bennett. Family, friends, and the school staff are all dramatically impacted by such an event and it is our goal to reduce and hopefully prevent such tragedies from occurring.
The 4.5 hour class is taught by certified law enforcement instructors who attend vigorous training sessions and demonstrate the interest and compassion to work with young adults.
The classes at the schools will begin being offered in May. The cost of the course is $35. The South Carolina National Safety Council has scholarships available for students who need assistance. Classes are also offered to the public and often used in conjunction with the Pre Trial Intervention Program, underage drinking programs, and general driver training classes.
