(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina lawmakers have advanced a bill barring high-sugar, high-fat foods from the school lunch line or vending machines. Except for brownie fundraiser sales.
The House Education Committee approved the bill Thursday, sending it to the full House. The same committee rejected the measure two months ago after school officials opposed it.
Changes to increase support included exempting fundraising food sales by students, teachers or other groups.
Another change limits the healthy requirements to school day hours. The bill previously had also covered extracurricular student practices and meetings before and after school.
Republican Rep. Jim Stewart of Aiken says he doesn't understand why lawmakers have to require schools to provide healthy food to students.
