COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Hundreds of teachers from across South Carolina are coming to Columbia to learn about single-gender education.
(AP) --    South Carolina is the national leader in offering single-gender programs in public schools. Nearly 220 schools offer boy-only and girl-only classes. That's seven times the number from two years ago, when state schools chief Jim Rex hired the country's first and only statewide single-gender coordinator.
The Education Department expects more than 350 teachers from 41 districts to attend Saturday's workshops.
The agency's Office of Public School Choice added a statewide Montessori coordinator last year. More than 30 public schools offer Montessori programs.
Legislation requiring school districts to offer such choices was introduced this week.
