A man is dead and a woman has been hospitalized, after a car accident in Orangeburg County on Monday. Lance Corporal Josef Robinson, with the Highway Patrol says it happened on Pasture Lane. The vehicle was completely destroyed. Robinson says the driver ran off the road and overcorrected, causing the truck to overturn. The driver was ejected. Investigators say he was not wearing a seatbelt. The passenger, Susan O'Quinn was wearing a seatbelt and survived. Now some neighbors are looking for some major road improvements.
"People like to live a little bit later not die this quick," said loal Bobby Nettles.
Nettles has lived on Pasture Lane for more than 60 years. He says the road's conditions make accidents nearly unavoidable.
"It didn't surprise me at all, It didn't," said Nettles.
According to Nettles it's narrow, has too many potholes and when you factor in other elements he says it quickly becomes accident-prone.
"Especially when it's raining, you ride up and down here and you are betting on a broken limb," said Nettles.
Susan O'Quinn's family says the accident wasn't the first, and they fear it won't be the last.
Several signs warn drivers about dangerous curves, but Nettles says they aren't enough. He wants other improvements.
"Willis up there, he said he was going to get some petition up and get everybody to sign it," said Nettles. "And I told him I would."
Susan O"Quinn remains in the hospital. Her family says she suffered a severe head injury in the accident. The family also says they've been asking for road improvements since 2003, when a 16-year-old died in a crash not far from Monday's scene.
