The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a safety day for children between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 28 at Irmo Middle School at 6051 Wescott Road near Irmo. Sheriff’s Department Explorers will create fingerprint identification cards for children. Deputies will inspect child safety seats in order to ensure that the seats are installed properly in motor vehicles.
Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Irmo/St. Andrews Resident Deputy Marti Faglie will organize the safety day in partnership with Babies-R-Us/Toys-R-Us, Irmo Fire District, Lexington County Emergency Medical Services, Midlands Safe Kids, Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, Poison Control, School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties and State Farm Insurance. The event will include static displays of public safety equipment, such as a marked Sheriff’s Department Traffic Division patrol car.
Metts encourages parents to bring their children to the safety day event so that Sheriff’s Department Explorers can fingerprint and create identification cards for the children. Law enforcement officers can use the cards to help identify children in the event that children are reported missing or are abducted. A parent or legal guardian must accompany each child who is fingerprinted.
The goal of the event is to provide children and their parents with information that will help keep children safe, Metts said. Deputies who completed special training provided by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety will inspect child safety seats in order to ensure that the seats are installed properly in motor vehicles.
