RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia, four other states -- including South Carolina -- and the federal government have agreed to take a regional approach to improving and expanding a roughly 1,000-mile segment of Interstate 95.

The agreement announced Tuesday is part of the Corridors of the Future Program.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says the goal is to reduce congestion and increase safety.

VDOT says the other participants are Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
