CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A 44-year-old man suspected in a string of bank robberies across South Carolina has a long criminal history.

Jeffrey Frye is charged with holding up a North Charleston bank on Christmas Eve and is a suspect in at least a half-dozen other bank robberies across the state. He remains in the Charleston County jail with his bail set at $1 million after his arrest Monday at a North Charleston motel.

A sheriff's spokesman said Thursday that no attorney is listed for Frye.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that Frye has at least 51 convictions over the past 22 years, ranging from shoplifting to felony robbery. But the former paralegal has spent less than seven years in prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald says Frye likely will be tried in federal court.
