Busy Bee lawn care is just one of many local businesses braving the chilly temperatures this week.
"We've actually been fortunate this winter so far, but we know what's coming and we know it's about to get a little colder," said Thames.
Jay Thames and Brandon Amerson know the importance of bundling up, especially since they spend up to eight hours in the elements.
"You've got to stay warm. We'll suit up, wear plenty of clothes, keep plenty of hats and gloves. You just want to stay warm," said Amerson.
Doctor Gary Hals with Palmetto Health Richland has seen the effects of cold first hand and says frigid temperatures can land people in the emergency room.
"When your whole body temperature gets low besides it effecting your mental state, all the organs stop functioning properly," said Hals.
Workers like Thames and Amerson say the trick to staying warm is plenty of clothing and starting their workday when the sun comes up.
Doctor Hals backs up that plan, adding the important thing is to listen to your body.
"I think once you've been exposed to the cold to the point where you are losing sensation to fingers or your toes start to get numb, that's a signal you need to come in and get out of the cold," said Hals.
Advice Amerson and Thames are sure to follow to make sure their workday doesn't end up on ice.
