CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A Charleston musician indicted for cocaine trafficking four years ago is back in the U.S. after spending two years on the run and another two years in jail in the Netherlands.
The Charleston Post and Courier reported Joe Ambrosia was brought back to the U.S. last week after his attempt to fight extradition ended.
Ambrosia faces the state drug charge and a federal count of passport fraud. He made an initial appearance in federal court Monday. Prosecutors say he did not object to a government request to keep him in jail until his trial.
Ambrosia's attorney, Tivis Sutherland, says his 68-year-old client has been ill with skin cancer since his arrest and he has not had a chance to speak to Ambrosia at length.
