State and federal health officials say they are searching a South Carolina sewage plant as part of a criminal investigation into improper record keeping.

Thom Berry with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control says officials executed a criminal search warrant at the Columbia Metro Waste Water Treatment Plant around 8 a.m. Thursday.  Investigators spent the day at the plant.

Special Agent Ivan Vikin with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency confirms the joint investigation.  Officials are saying little about the probe, but Vikin confirms investigators are searching through a number of things at the plant ranging from files to hard drives.

Columbia Mayor Bob Coble says the city is pledging its full support to the investigation and indicates the search warrant served Thursday morning alleges the city allowed contaminate water to be dumped in the Congaree River.

It's likely investigators will be at the plant at least through Friday.
