Harrell re-elected as House speaker

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina House's 124 members have re-elected Charleston Rep. Bobby Harrell as speaker.

The Republican-controlled House began a two-day organizational session Tuesday and started by electing officers.

Harrell was elected to finish the term of Greenville Rep. David Wilkins when President Bush chose him as U.S. ambassador to Canada in 2005.

Harrell was unopposed.

House members also elected Rep. Harry Cato of Travelers Rest as speaker pro tem in a second unopposed race. Cato had been chairman of the House's Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee.
