ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) -- An Anderson County plant that makes carpet fibers is closing at the end of January, leaving 170 workers without a job.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reports that Shaw Industries Group Inc. officials said they are shutting down the plant because the slowing of the housing market means less demand for carpet. But the company says it has expanded production at other plants.

Shaw Human Resources Director Al Scruggs says some workers may be able to get jobs at other plants, but he didn't know how many positions would be open.

The company says the plant that is closing mostly made fibers for a different facility in Anderson County.
