GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Furman University officials say a noose has been found hanging from the ceiling at the school's student center, but they don't think it was part of an organized effort to create racial tension.

University spokesman John Roberts said Monday that members of the black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha found the noose last Wednesday as they prepared for an event.

Authorities say the noose was made with a rope usually used to hang banners at the center and hadn't been up for long.

Roberts says the school does not know if the noose was put up to antagonize blacks or by someone ignorant of its meaning. Officials don't think it's part of an orchestrated racist scheme.

The university says an aggressive investigation is ongoing.
