CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The widow of a South Carolina billionaire has given $500,000 to the Lowcountry Food Bank to help build a kitchen to provide a hot meal to needy children after school.

Anita Zucker told The Charleston Post and Courier that it's especially important to remember those less fortunate in bad economic times.

Zucker's gift will be used to build a kitchen at the food bank's new building, where meals will be made for more than 1,500 children in after-school programs.

Food bank director D. Jermaine Husser says all donations are important now because the charity has seen an increase in demand, which has caused food supplies to dwindle.

Anita Zucker is the widow of Jerry Zucker, a Charleston businessman who died earlier this year.
