Richland County authorities are warning people to protect their property and watch out for their neighbors after a number of burglaries and car break-ins in the Northeast Richland County area.
The Woodlands Village and Windsor Lake communities have been hit with roughly 80 break-ins over the past few weeks. Crooks are breaking in to cars and homes in those areas looking for wallets, and electronics like GPS systems, televisions, and laptop computers.
Ernest Robinson moved to Windsor Lake Park more than 20 years ago. Back then, the 63-year-old remembers someone tried to steal a neighbor's car. But, these days crooks are upping the ante. Some homes in his neighborhood have recently been burglarized.
"It's like people don't care how they take care of your property," says Robinson. "It's like anything goes."
Sheriff Leon Lott blames the spike in crime on the bad economy and the coming holiday season.
"It's the perfect storm to see an increase in criminal activity," says Lott. "We're seeing it and people need to realize what's happening and let's do something about it."
Sheriff Lott urges people to get involved in community watch groups and be sure to report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood to police.
