FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) -- A former Lake City police officer has been convicted of drug trafficking and extortion.
The Morning News of Florence reports that former Sgt. Shanita McKnight cried as the guilty verdict was read Tuesday evening. The verdict followed a five-day federal trial. McKnight faces 10 years to life in prison and fines of up to $8 million.
Prosecutors said McKnight was part of a drug ring in Lake City and used her position as a police officer to make people pay her. They also said McKnight tipped off drug dealers on when investigators would be in town.
Prosecutors presented more than a dozen witnesses.
McKnight's attorney, Joseph Henry, had argued jurors shouldn't believe the testimony of criminals. He did not present any witnesses.
