Several Richland County deputies were involved in a late-night shootout.

Lieutenant Chris Cowan with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department says the shootout happened after the suspect tried to break in to Hanson Brick off Frost Avenue around midnight Friday.

When the deputies arrived on the scene, the suspect took off in his white Chevy pick-up truck. He led the deputies on a short chase that ended at McGraff Street.

The deputies got out of their patrol cars to try and arrest the driver, but he tried to run them over and rammed in to two of the patrol cars. That’s when the deputies opened fire on the suspect.

The suspect was hit several times, but was able to get away. He was arrested a short time later by Columbia police.

The suspect was taken to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital.

None of the officers involved were reported injured.

Authorities say a second suspect was involved in the attempted burglary. If you have any information on the identity of this suspect, call CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
