COLUMBIA (WACH ) - One suspect is in custody and police are searching for a second suspect after a reported armed robbery at a jewelry store on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the Columbia Police Department says preliminary information indicates one suspect entered Mims Jewelry on Garners Ferry Road before noon Tuesday carrying a handgun and asked the people in the store to get on the ground. A second suspect entered the store, smashed a glass counter and took jewelry. At least three people were in the store at the time of the incident.  No one was injured.

Police say both suspects ran from the store, got in a car and left the scene. The driver crashed the car on Pennington Way near Leesburg Road. Both suspects tried to run away on foot. Police were able to arrest one suspect, but are still searching for the second suspect.

Descriptions of the suspects and the getaway car have not been released.

Police are questioning witnesses and working to see if video surveillance is available.

One witness chased the getaway car, but did not wreck or suffer any injuries, according to police.

The crash on Pennington Way slowed down traffic temporarily.

The investigation is ongoing.
