Columbia S.C. (WACH) -- Lawmakers are working on a bill that would deny bond for repeat offenders.
Charleston House Representative Chip Limehouse is one of 4 lawmakers sponsoring a bill that would revoke bond if a person violates the law repeatedly.
"Violent crimes battery, murder, rape, this legislation is aimed at the worst of the worst and getting them off the street," said Rep. Chip Limehouse Charleston Republican.
Under the current state law when a person is arrested for a non-capital offense they are eligible for bond.
Lawmakers argue that repeat offenders are slipping through the cracks and they are working to change that.
"A very small number of thugs are victimizing people all across this state because of this loophole in our law and we need to close it," said Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin.
If the bill is passed, it could go into effect as early as June 2013.
