COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The man who took over earlier this month as Abbeville County sheriff will keep serving in that role for at least a few more months.

Spokesman Rob Godfrey said Thursday that Gov. Nikki Haley had decided to keep Abbeville County Coroner Ronnie Ashley on as sheriff until voters select a new one in a special election later this year.

Ashley took over earlier this month when Charles Goodwin resigned amid indictment in a kickback scheme. Last week, Goodwin pleaded guilty to misconduct in office, acknowledging he took kickbacks on repairs on county vehicles and using a state inmate to do personal work.

County election officials say filing opens Feb. 1, and a primary election is scheduled for March 26.

The general election is set for May 14.
