COLUMBIA (WACH) -- According to the SC Highway Patrol, the state's streets are becoming more and more dangerous for pedestrians.

In 2009, 88 people died after being hit by a vehicle while walking down the road or sidewalk. In 2010, that number rose to 90. In 2011, 114 people were killed as pedestrians, and last year the death toll was up to 121.

Just last week a woman in Columbia was injured while crossing in front of a car that police say had a green light, but many such accidents can be avoided with simple precautions.

To stay safe as a pedestrian, SC Highway Patrol offers these tips:

- Don't wear dark clothing.

- Put on something reflective so drivers can see you.

- If you're wearing headphones, take them off, so you can hear cars approaching you.

- Walk on the left side of the road, that way if you can see any cars coming at you, you can avoid them.

Finally, pedestrian safety can't be ensured without drivers staying alert as well.

"Drive slow, watch out for pedestrians, and take your time." said Wygold Robertson, a partially blind Columbia pedestrian.
