COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Martin Luther King Day is Monday, but the University of South Carolina is celebrating with several events over the weekend.

USC held a breakfast Friday morning at Williams-Brice Stadium commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. King.

About 550 people attended, listening to the keynotes speech by the president of the NAACP, North Carolina Chapter, Rev. Dr. William Barber.

Barber encouraged the audience to advocate for laws that would give people the social justice Dr. King spoke about. He also encouraged people to take Dr. King's mindset as they remember his birthday.

"When we celebrate Dr. King, we have to do it in his tradition," said Barber. "He was a prophet. He was one who looked at life through Heaven's eyes, which meant his focus was on justice and equality. As I said, he wasn't about black supremacy or white supremacy. He was about right and wrong."

Other MLK events at USC included a panel at the law school Thursday night to talk about the challenges of being female in the law profession.

A gospel fest is planned for Sunday to celebrate the music that has been associated with the civil rights movement.
