COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Purple was the color of choice on the front steps of the South Carolina Statehouse on Friday; to remind people about a dangerous disease.

Organizers with Skip to my Lupus Inc. raised awareness for Lupus. The auto-immune disease attacks both good and bad cells. It can lead to failure in the heart, kidneys, lungs, skin, and muscles.

10 year survivor Alison Sheppard said raising money makes a huge difference.

"When you are in your 20's and you are constantly sick, and you are being affected by having to go in and out of the hospital while your friends are partying and going to college, not only does it physically tear you down, it will break you down mentally and emotionally," Sheppard said. "It is not easy to continue to smile and keep pushing. But that is what Skip to my Lupus is for."
