COLUMBIA (WACH) - A large check was presented Wednesday to children in need.

Friends of Epworth Children's Home donated $17,000 dollars to children who have come to the home from fractured families.

The money was raised through donations from individuals and organizations at the inaugural Picture Perfect Gala this year.

Epworth Children's Home gets about 40 percent of its funding from private donations like those from the gala.

"These funds are going to be used for direct care for the children at Epworth," said Mitzie Schafer, with Epworth Children's Home. "It's going to pay for their tutoring, for their health care, for their counseling sessions, for the fun activities that they do."

Children are placed at Epworth after experiencing abuse, neglect, or significant loss.

The organization "Friends of Epworth" plans to make its gala an annual fundraising event for the home.
