COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Nearly two dozen South Carolina schools and nonprofits statewide are receiving a total of $1.8 million in federal grants to provide students with before- and after-school programs.

The state Department of Education announced Friday that the money will be used to operate 22 community learning centers that provide students with academic and enrichment activities. The schools and nonprofits will each receive up to $200,000 annually for up to four years.

The grants were awarded through a competitive process. The centers also provide activities during the summer.

Winners of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants include school districts, a Boys and Girls Club, and education nonprofits.
