COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Law Enforcement from across the Palmetto State were in Columbia to kick off a special fundraiser.

Officials kicked off the Law Enforcement for Special Olympics 2013 Campaign Tuesday. The international event will go towards raising awareness and money for special Olympics programs around the world; including the state's Torch Run event.

One hundred percent of the proceeds go to help athletes participating in the Torch Run. Currently, the Palmetto State has about 22,000 special needs athletes participate.

"They are truly heroes," Cpl. Mike Still with the state Transport Police said. "They have people staring at them everyday, saying 'You can't do this, you can't do that.' This gives them an opportunity to say 'I can do it. I have this talent. I can be just like you'".

Bojangles, Fatz Cafe, TD Bank, Publix, and Krispy Kreme are all sponsors. They are all accepting donations.
