SUMTER, SC (WACH) - A 13-year-old boy is accused of setting fires that damaged three homes in Sumter last week.

Sumter Police Department officials say the teen is charged with three counts of third degree arson and one county of burglary.

Detectives say the boy was a person of interest early in the investigation and evidence ties the teen to the fires.

According to police, two fires occurred at homes on Sampson Street Friday night and one occurred at a vacant home on Walker Street Saturday night. The fires caused hundreds of dollars in damage, and the homes on Sampson Street were occupied when the fires were set.

The juvenile was being detained Thursday at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice Detention Center in Columbia.

The investigation is ongoing.
