ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) -- A Gaffney woman has been sentenced to eight months in prison for stealing more than $60,000 in child support from a Cherokee County fund.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles says 40-year-old Melanie Sparks was sentenced Tuesday in Anderson. She was also ordered to pay restitution.

Sparks pleaded guilty in August. Prosecutors say she worked as a deputy clerk in the child support section of the Cherokee County clerk's office and took money from cash receipts.

An audit showed that more than $60,000 was missing between January 2008 and November 2009. Prosecutors say Sparks used the money to pay personal expenses and fund an online business that sold pottery.
