CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The former treasurer of a Charleston-area volunteer sports organization is accused of embezzling over $8,000 during her two-year stint.

Authorities said 35-year-old Tanya Garvin Howard of Johns Island turned herself in Wednesday on a charge of breach of trust.

Deputies say Howard took $8,360 and change from the Lowcountry Little League, a volunteer baseball league located on Johns Island.

Howard resigned as treasurer in September. During an audit that followed, the league's district administrator said he noticed discrepancies in the league's accounts and called authorities.

It wasn't known if Howard had an attorney. League officials said they would file an insurance claim to try to recoup some of the money to keep the league going this year.
