COLUMBIA (WACH / AP) -- The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating an accounting discrepancy at the South Carolina Education Lottery.

Lottery executive director Paula Bethea says an internal investigation revealed the issue in early October.

“I can say that appropriate actions have been taken and any accounting discrepancies have been resolved,” said Bethea. “Although tight internal control mechanisms were in place to prevent this type of action, someone intent on circumventing procedures and controls found a way. Even more stringent additional monitoring procedures are now in place to detect this kind of activity in the future.”

Bethea says South Carolina Education Lottery retailers, players and prizes are protected and that the integrity of the games were never affected.

Bethea did not give details about how much money was missing or how the discrepancy was discovered.
