CHARLESTON, S.C. (WACH/AP) -- The Army Corps of Engineers estimates that Hurricane Sandy did about $3 million in damage to Folly Beach.

The corps said Tuesday that an assessment of the beach erosion at Folly estimates that it will cost between $2.7 million and $3.5 million to restore the sand on the beach.

The corps says the storm took up to 100,000 cubic yards of sand from Folly. Hurricane Irene last year took an estimated 325,000 cubic yards of sand.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that  as the storm eroded between 3 and 5 feet of beach as it moved north last weekend.

The corps earlier had estimated it would take up to $20 million to restore the beach from Irene's damage.

Folly Beach Mayor Tim Goodwin says he hopes federal approval for the effort will come soon. Goodwin says Sandy may have added another $1 million to the city's cost of beach renourishment.
