COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The South is known for being hot. As temperatures climb you need to be a little more cautious while trying to stay fit.

If you like to exercise it is best to do so before 10 a.m. and after 3 p.m.

This allows you to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Dr. Russell Pate, a USC Exercise Science Professor says there are many ways to stay safe in the scorching sun.

"Clearly extreme heat is a stresser and it can be risky. Persons that become dehydrated because of the exposure to the temperatures are at an increased risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke so fluid replacement is important."

If you are already physically fit you might have a little less to worry about. Dr. Pate said "persons that are normally active and maintain a good level of fitness and are prepared to apply common sense can and should be physically active through the summer."

The heat didn't keep children at Finlay Park away from playing.

However, parents and grandparents continue to keep a watchful eye on the fun in the Sun.

Patricia Craine said she only let her Grandaughter play on things that were in shade and out of the Sun.

The heat is here to stay with the only relief being the usual afternoon thunderstorms.

Dr. Pate has some simple advice.

"Apply commoon sense and rehydrate thoroughly."
